Sammy was the cherished companion and best friend to Linda Smith, the founder of Rim of the World Comfort Pets (RWCP). For 5 1/2 years Linda and Sammy worked side by side as visiting therapy pet volunteers. They visited a variety of health care and educational milieus, bringing smiles to countless people. Everyone that knew Sammy loved him. His love for his work also made him a model for training standards in service and therapy. Tragically, Sammy's mission was cut short on the night of August 7, 2009 when he was fatally injured in an accident.
The painful and premature loss of Sammy has prompted the members of RWCP to establish a fund to honor his memory and continue his legacy in community service, and therapy/service dog training. The recipient of Sammy's Fund may be an individual, group, school or organization. The funds will be used in the area of a service related project. This is the work that Sammy loved best. Once a year in October; Sammy's birth month, the annual fund benefit will be commemorated with a plaque. The Sammy Memorial Fund has been started from donations received from RWCP group members, friends and family in addition to local individuals and businesses. We gladly accept donations from anyone who desires to support our mission.
RWCP has established visiting animal programs at a number of health care facilities including, The Mountains Community Hospital in Lake Arrowhead, The Jerry L. Pettis Memorial V.A. Medical Center in Loma Linda and Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana. Additionally, RWCP participates in children's learning programs in the local school district. The focus of their work is to improve human health and quality of life by promoting mutually beneficial relationships between people and comfort animals.
Mission Statement: To elevate and maintain the standards of professionalism in the field of comfort pet therapy and its related activities. We hope to achieve widespread recognition of comfort pet therapy and volunteerism as valuable forms of treatment and service. As people who recognize and value the benefits of volunteer service, we want to share our animals and our special skills as a means of improving the quality of life for those who interact with our "Comfort Pet Teams."
